Sociology Studies - Social Inequality

This free sociology course will first discuss the meaning of social stratification. You will study the different sociological models of global stratification and learn how it can help identify worldwide inequalities. You will then examine theoretical perspectives on social stratification and learn how different classification systems have developed. The course will also discuss the World Bank’s classification of economies and the economic situation of some of the world’s most impoverished areas. You will then study modernization and dependency theory perspectives on global stratification.

Next, the course will cover the difference between race and ethnicity and between sex and gender. You will also learn about stereotypes including prejudice, discrimination, and racism. You will look into the role of homophobia and heterosexism in society, the influence of socialization on gender roles in the United States, and sexual inequality in various societies. Finally, you will study the concept of universal access to education and be guided through the Theoretical Perspectives on Education.
