Brain disorders are a significant public health concern worldwide, impacting millions yearly. This neuropathology course provides a complete understanding of common brain disorders, including their causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention. We first explore the brain's anatomy and function. We then describe the causes of brain disorders, which include genetic factors, lifestyle, environment or a combination of the three. The course examines the diagnosis and emerging treatment options and therapies used to prevent and manage brain disorders.
The course discusses a range of common neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's disease (HD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. We then move on to neuropsychiatric disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety. The course lays out the diagnostic procedures, symptoms and treatment for each. We also explore the effects of traumatic brain injuries like concussions and diffuse axonal injuries.
Next, we explore developmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia and various intellectual disabilities (ID). We identify their common characteristics, causes, diagnoses and treatment options, which combine medication and behavioral therapy. Finally, we cover treatment and prevention strategies, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions that help reduce morbidity and mortality rates while enhancing population health and quality of life.
